The complete guide to luxury business card finishes — 2026.

Real foil vs printed, soft-touch vs suede, edge paint, NFC, holographic. The reference we send to clients.

2026 EDITION · UPDATED JUNE 2026 · 14 MIN READ

A business card is the most decision-dense piece of paper a brand will ever produce. You're choosing a substrate, a finish, a print method, a foil tone, an edge treatment, and increasingly whether to embed a chip. Each choice has a real cost and a real visual payoff. This is what we explain to clients when they pick up the phone.

Why finishes matter more than design

Strong type on a cheap substrate looks worse than weak type on a great substrate. The substrate sets the recipient's emotional baseline before they've read a word. Number-one rule we give clients: get the substrate right first, then add maybe one finish.

The six finishes worth knowing

1. Hot foil stamping

A heated metal die presses real metallic film into the substrate. Brighter than ink, permanent, tactile. $150 / 100 cards. Use for luxury, hospitality, real estate, wedding, beauty.

2. Cold foil

Adhesive + pressure (no heat). Lies flat — no deboss. From $0.80/card. Use when you want metallic at scale but don't need the tactile deboss.

3. Soft-touch laminate

Velvet-feeling lamination. Fingerprint-resistant. From $90/100. Use when premium feel is the goal but price needs to stay under $1/card.

4. Edge paint

Coloured paint on cut edges of thick stock. Standard on 32pt+. +$32 added on top. Pair with matching foil for "all-out luxury."

5. Blind deboss / emboss

Die-pressing without foil — just impression. Subtle. +$28. Often paired with foil — foil for logo, deboss for secondary mark.

6. NFC chip

Embedded chip — tap a phone, browser opens your URL. $9/card. Sales, conference exhibitors, anywhere a tap beats typing.

Cost ladder — 1,000 cards

Biggest perceived-quality jump is "standard" → "32pt cotton + soft-touch" — +$75 for a card that costs 3× as much to make.

When NOT to use foil

The three combos we sell most

  1. Antique gold foil on 48pt black-core with matching gold edge paint — the "I run a real business" combo. Real estate, wedding, hospitality, finance. $2.10/card at 500.
  2. Soft-touch matte black with rose gold foil monogram — beauty, wellness, lifestyle. $1.40/card at 500.
  3. 32pt suede with blind-deboss logo only — architecture, design studios. $1.20/card at 500. Whisper-luxury.
