File requirements
What we need from you
  • Vector foil layer — AI, EPS, or SVG with all type outlined
  • Spot colour layer labelled "Foil" (not CMYK)
  • 0.125″ bleed on all four sides
  • 0.125″ safe zone inside the trim
  • 0.5pt minimum stroke for foil elements
  • 300 DPI minimum for any raster (non-foiled) elements

Common mistakes
What we flag at prepress
  • Foil as a CMYK swatch — needs its own spot layer
  • Foil overlapping ink — they don't bond well
  • Fine serifs in small type — corners chip on the press
  • Live fonts, not outlined — breaks the foil layer

What our prepress team actually checks.

Every file goes through this 8-point review before it touches the press. Most problems are fixable; we email you with options before charging anything.

01
Bleed & trim

Is the bleed at least 0.125″ on all four sides? Are any critical elements too close to the trim line?

02
Foil layer integrity

Is the foil layer a labelled spot colour? Are all strokes ≥0.5pt? Any hairlines that would chip?

03
Ink-foil overlap

We check for any printed ink underneath foil areas — they don't bond well and lift over time.

04
Font handling

All type outlined? Any live fonts get replaced or substituted at output — we catch this before press.

05
Colour space

CMYK or Pantone for printed elements. RGB files get converted but we flag colour shift risks.

06
Raster resolution

Any embedded photos or textures need 300 DPI at final size. Low-res gets flagged with a preview.

07
Registration

Foil + printed ink layers need tight alignment. We test plate the first 5 cards before running the full job.

08
Substrate compatibility

Foil behaves differently on suede vs cotton vs black-core. We confirm your tone + substrate is press-tested.

How to set up the foil layer.

The single biggest reason files get bounced. Your foil-stamped elements need to live on their own layer, named "Foil", set as a spot colour — not as a CMYK fill or gradient.

Three layers, top to bottom

In Illustrator: open Window → Layers, create a new layer at the top called Foil. Move every element that should be foil-stamped onto this layer. Select all those elements, open the Swatches panel, and create a new spot colour — name it Foil, set to 100% magenta as a visible placeholder (we replace it with real foil at output).

Underneath that: your printed text on its own layer, then your background art at the bottom. Don't merge them — we need each layer separate to align the press.

In InDesign: same concept — make a colour swatch named Foil, set Color Type to Spot, and apply it to the elements that should be foiled. Send us the packaged file (PDF/X-4 export is ideal).
